“Do what I say, because I say so!” This is an example of what one might hear from an authoritarian teacher. The authoritarian teacher wants to maintain control over her students and expects obedience at all times. The desks are usually lined up one in front of the other, facing the teacher’s desk which is situated in the front of the classroom. Instruction is rigorous but drill- like, with no variations. This classroom is very different from the collaborative classroom. These students are discouraged from any peer to peer interactions. This teacher doesn’t give praise or encouragement to students; she may appear rigid and doesn’t show any indication that she likes or cares about the student. What are your thoughts? Is this teaching style effective in motivating students? Can this style be effective or harmful to students?
